Hip tightness. Less than perfect squats. Back pain. All things that everyday people experience. If you are one of these people, one of the best things to work on is the mobility in your hips.
Many of us spend our days sitting at a desk. We all know we are supposed to sit with our back straight and shoulders back for good back posture. But what about the other problems this position is causing? When we spend all day sitting, our hips are in a constantly flexed position, which in turn makes our hips incredibly tight. Even those who don’t spend their days at a desk may suffer from tightness in their hip flexors. But what does this mean for us? It means less mobility, and it means further pain in everyday life as well as during your workouts. Many people also tend to experience back pain throughout the day, and it carries over into a workout. Very often, back pain is actually caused by a tightness in the hips. We spend a lot of time trying to alleviate the symptom, the pain in our back, without actually fixing the cause of the problem. But we can fix the cause, simply by spending more time focusing on loosening the hips. However, pain relief isn’t the only benefit we experience.
Squats are one of the most commonly utilized exercises. We use them in both our large and small group training, and we use them often. Whether your squats are amazing or they need some work, there is always room to improve our form and our range of motion. One of the ways we can do this is, you guessed it, by creating more mobility in our hips.
We ask you to come into class ten minutes early to foam roll and stretch. The Spiderman hip-lunge is a fantastic stretch for getting into the hips and loosening the entire hip complex. It will also help us to increase our range of motion in our squat, perfect our form, and perform more pain-free. Specifically, you will gain a greater range of motion, and you will be better able to keep your chest from falling forward, gaining us the ability to really target the quads, and it will help to alleviate any prior back pain caused from squatting.
